Applying Ethical Principles
For many years, vaccination has been considered the most effective method of preventing and controlling contagious diseases globally. On most occasions, vaccines are provided to children below the age of five years as it is assumed that they are at a higher risk of being infected and spreading the diseases to other people. Although many parents agree to vaccinate their children, many are hesitant about vaccines due to personal reasons. Hesitation to vaccines among parents causes ethical dilemmas for health professionals. To maintain the ethical practice, healthcare providers must apply the ethical decision-making model and ethical principles to address the issue. This paper analyses the ethical decision-making model and ethical principles as applied in a given case study.
Summary of the Facts in the Case Study
The case study involves Ana, a five-day-old baby, her parents, Jenna and Chris Smith, and their pediatrician, Dr. Angela Kerr. Ana’s parents had decided to raise their baby naturally, breastfeeding only for the first six months, feeding her pureed organic food after the six months, and not vaccinating her (Darr, Farnsworth, & Myrtle, 2017). Both parents had a college education, and so they had basic knowledge about vaccines. However, their decision was made after doing some online research about vaccines, which showed that their disadvantages were more than their benefits. Jenna and Chris referred to online mommy blogs, which related vaccines to the many cases of autism.
After listening attentively to Ana’s parents, the pediatrician, Dr. Kerr, started by explaining the advantages of vaccines. Some of the benefits include reducing child mortality, decreasing the child’s exposure to vaccine-preventable illnesses, and enhancing the safety of the public. She noted that the federal government assesses all vaccines administered to the public for protection. The pediatrician gave Ana’s parents a link, https://vaers.hhs.gov/index, to Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), where they could learn more about approved vaccines and their safety data (Darr, Farnsworth, & Myrtle, 2017)…Kindly click the purchase icon to access the full solution at $10
