Instructions
The purpose of this assignment is to apply the principles of pharmacology to support evidence-based prescribing practices for the management of common diseases of the endocrine system. This assignment allows students to use clinical practice guidelines to guide treatment decisions for common patient scenarios in the clinical setting.
Course Outcomes
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
- CO 1: Identify the most commonly prescribed agents in the major drug classes. (POs 1, 2)
- CO 2: Make appropriate evidence-based therapeutic treatment decisions for individual patients utilizing drugs from the major drug classes.(POs 1, 2)
- CO 3: Apply knowledge of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacogenomics in prescribing patient treatment. (POs 1, 2)
- CO 4: Distinguish internal and external environment factors affecting drug action, reaction, efficacy, and interaction. (POs 1, 2)
- CO 5: Identify client indicators of therapeutic, ineffective, adverse responses and side effects to drug therapy. (POs 1, 2)
Solution
Question 1
Please explain the value and reason for doing your own work and not copying or taking answers from another source and claiming them as your own.
Your Answer:
I understand how important it is to do my own work and learning this skill to support my future independent practice as a nurse practitioner. I realize that while collaboration or sharing of answers with colleagues may be possible in circumstances beyond the control of my faculty, doing so would be counterproductive to my own professional and personal progress. I commit to be self-motivated and take ownership of my education.

Question 2
Use the John Jones case study to answer the following question.
Using diagnostic criteria for diabetes, what is John’s diabetic status? What treatment plan should be introduced at this time?
Your Answer:
DM Diagnostic Criteria on pg 398 reviews the four criteria to
diagnose DM which is the precursor to pharmacological
intervention. These criteria include:
• Fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dLa Or
• Random plasma glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL plus symptoms of
diabetes Or
• Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT): 2-h plasma glucose
≥200 mg/dLc Or
• Hemoglobin A1c 6.5% or higher;
He has diabetes type 2 and requires pharmacological intervention. According to the ADA Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes2020, Metformin is the first-line medication to prescribe for patients with a HgbA1C >6.5%(ADA,2020).
