The nursing profession is constantly evolving. It is critical that advanced practice nurses are educated on the importance of nursing informatics. Nursing informatics consists of specific ideas from computer, cognitive, information, and nursing sciences (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). I currently work as a RN in a Rheumatology clinic and there are several ways in which we use informatics. Our electronic health record has built in safety alerts. For example, if I would accidently type in 900 for a pulse, instead of 90, it lights up in red. Another example is when I add new medications onto a patient’s medication list. It will flag me if there are duplicates or if there is any contradiction with taking that medication with another medication on the patient’s list. There are many safety features in place which significantly help to protect our patients of potential errors.
